Dr. Sato is the Research Director of Metastatic Uveal Melanoma Program at Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center of Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Sato’s research focuses on improving our understanding of uveal melanoma, developing, and delivering innovative new therapies for the disease including immunotherapy— utilizing the immune system to fight Uveal melanoma. He also has been working on liver-directed treatments to control hepatic metastasis of uveal melanoma patients.
Dr. Sato established innovative methods for treating uveal melanoma and delaying its progression. One of his clinical trials implement immunoembolization: application of a chemical stimulant of the immune system to the liver tumor through the hepatic artery followed by an asphyxiation via artery blockade to trap the injected medicine in the tumor and to kill tumor cells by cutting blood supply. The outcomes of these clinical trials are very promising, with two thirds of patients achieved no tumor progression with survival benefit.
